Albums such as this, with its important contemporary visual history of colonial South Africa, prove central to an understanding of colonial histories in documenting military campaigns, “topographical features… and visible mineral resources,” while also demonstrating photography’s role as “an integral part of… the colonial enterprise” (Lenman, 132). The volume also includes informative text on South African history and a biographical essay on British statesman Sir Henry Bartle Frere, to whom this volume is dedicated. Frere served as “governor of the Cape and high commissioner for the settlement of native affair in South Africa” and his leadership was instrumental during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 (DNB). Printed by Sam Alexander and issued by subscription only, with 100 tissue-guarded vintage collotype prints produced by Marion and Company, a London photographic firm.
