BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY AMERICAN ARTIST NEWBOLD HOUGH TROTTER, 1881: “THE BATTLE OF THE BULLS”

Lovely original oil painting by renowned 19th-century American artist Newbold Hough Trotter depicting bull buffalo locking horns. In splendid original gilt frame.

Trotter was best known for his animal subjects, such as this dramatic painting of battling buffalo bulls. Born and residing for most of his life (1827-98) in Philadelphia, he exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1858 and 1887, and was active in the Art Club of Philadelphia, vice-president of the Artists’ Fund Society of Philadelphia, and a director and secretary of the Philadelphia Society of Artists. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York between 1871 and 1886 and at the Boston Athenaeum between 1859 and 1867. His painting “Wounded Buffaloes Pursued by Prairie Wolves” was purchased by General William Tecumseh Sherman for Army headquarters in Washington, DC, after it was prominently displayed at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Trotter went on to paint three commissions for the War Department and an equestrian portrait of General Sherman.
