Joseph Mills

“KEEPS US ON THE EDGE OF UNKNOWING”

MILLS, Joseph. Inner City. (Tucson and Washington, D.C.): Nazraeli / Hemphill, (2003). Quarto, original yellow cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $250.

Limited first edition of the first book by artist Joseph Mills, signed by him on the half title, with 44 gravure plates (including one gatefold) printed using amber-toned varnish, a process that links these images of Washington D.C. with the celebrated artistry of his photomontages.

In this limited edition of Inner City, artist and photographer Joseph Mills records life on the streets of Washington, D.C. in images printed on expired photographic paper, then coated with amber-toned varnish—a process that links "these street images and Mills' photomontages… displacing obvious 'reality' with a place that seems to originate in his mind, or ours." Essay by Anne Tucker. Limited to 2,000 copies. Published in conjunction with a 2003 exhibition at Washington's Corcoran Gallery.

A fine signed copy.
