First edition in English of Silone’s masterpiece, the second novel in his famed Abruzzo Trilogy.

Irving Howe praised Bread and Wine as a novel that “will speak to anyone, of whatever age, who tries to sincerely reflect on man’s fate in our century.” The Italian-born Silone’s epic second novel was first published as Brot und Wein (1936) while he was in exile, and in 1937 appeared in Italian as Pane e Vino, the same year as this first edition in English. The largely autobiographical novel is the second in Silone’s renowned Abruzzo Trilogy that includes Fontamara (1933) and The Seed Beneath the Snow (1940); it was later revised by Silone under the title Vino e Pane (1955). Translated into English by Gwenda David and Eric Mosbacher.
