MORLEY, Christopher. Works. Garden City: Doubleday, Page, 1927. Twelve volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter green morocco gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine labels, top edges gilt; uncut. $1700.

In the 1920s and 30s, Morley “was perhaps the most widely known professional man of letters in the United States” (DAB). His editorial career included positions with the publisher Doubleday, Page, Ladies’ Home Journal and Saturday Review of Literature, of which he was one of the founders. “In 1926, when the Book-of-the-Month Club was founded… Morley was named one of the original members of the book-selecting committee… For the next 28 years Morley not only read 15 or so books a month to prepare for his choices but also wrote brief reviews of scores of selections for the club’s newsletter… An indication of his fecundity is the fact that Doubleday, Page in 1927 issued the “Haverford Collected Edition” of his works in 12 volumes” (ANB). Morley’s career was to span another 30 years. Included in this set are essays, short stories, one-act plays, poems, and four novels. “His novels attracted his widest audience and perhaps best reveal his versatility” (ANB).

A handsome set in fine condition.
