HAWTHORNE’S WORKS, HANDSOMELY BOUND

HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel. The Works. Thirteen volumes. WITH: HAWTHORNE, Julian. Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife. A Biography. Two volumes. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin (Riverside Press), [1891]. ogether, fifteen volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and partially unopened. $3200.

“Standard Library Edition,” with introductory notes by Hawthorne’s son-in-law, George Parsons Lathrop, and illustrated with numerous etchings and steel-engravings.

Includes all of Hawthorne’s best-known works. Julian’s dual biography of his parents is an important work in its own right: “in analyzing the contributions of the notebooks to the fiction; in relating this fiction to the environment in which it took shape; and in insisting upon the cheerfulness and sanity of a temperament often regarded as morbid, the son has appreciably influenced modern interpretations of the father… It remains indispensable” (DAB). This edition was printed from the same plates as the trade printing of the “Riverside Edition,” with the same order of arrangement, volume titles, illustrations and title vignettes. Only 500 copies were originally printed in October 1891 and sold only by subscription. It was regularly reprinted thereafter. Clark B13.

A handsome set in about-fine condition.
