Vision Shared

Hank O'neal

“SOME OF THE MOST ICONIC IMAGES OF THE DECADE”

O’NEAL, Hank. A Vision Shared. A Classic Portrait of America and Its People 1935-1943. New York: St. Martin’s, (1976). Large quarto, original cream debossed cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $350.

First edition of this scarce collection of over 280 full-page photogravures of the Great Depression that “epitomize documentary photography” (Parr & Badger), featuring the work of Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn and eight other celebrated FSA photographers whose rare genius sparked America’s social documentary movement, many never before published in book form.

“The best-known of the documentary photography projects in 1930s America is of course the prosaically named photographic unit of the Farm Security Administration—or FSA. It has come to epitomize documentary photography… Some of the best and most ambitious photographers worked for it, including Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn and Russell Lee… [and] produced some of the most iconic images of the decade” (Parr & Badger I:122). Arranged chronologically from 1935-43, this exceptional collection of FSA images contains over 280 full-page photogravures after Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, Theo Jung, John Vachon, Jack Delano, Marion Post Wolcott, Carl Mydans, John Collier—each personally selected by the photographers or their estates. With essays by Hank O’Neal, Bernarda Shahn and Paul S. Taylor, whose text accompanied Lange’s photographs in American Exodus (1939). See Roth, 98, 102. See Open Book, 19. From the library of noted Newsweek photojournalist Peter Turnley, signed by him on the half title.

Images fresh and bright, light edge-wear, soiling to original cloth; some chipping, soiling to very good, price-clipped dust jacket.
