Facing New York

Bruce Gilden

“GET IN FAST, GET IN CLOSE AND GET OUT FAST”: FIRST EDITION OF FACING NEW YORK, SIGNED BY BRUCE GILDEN

GILDEN, Bruce. Facing New York. Manchester, England: Cornerhouse, (1992). Slim folio, original gray paper-covered boards, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $650.

First edition of Gilden’s first major photobook, signed by him on the title page, with 44 exhibition-size, black-and-white photogravure plates (many full page) by this explosive, “confrontational New York member of Magnum… an original voice in his own right” (Parr & Badger).

Brooklyn-born “Bruce Gilden is a street photographer, a confrontational New York member of Magnum, whose modus operandi is to get in fast, get in close and get out fast… Gilden remains a distinctive photographer, with much that marks him as an original voice in his own right” (Parr & Badger II:310). With Facing New York, his first major photobook, Gilden boldly “captured the uniquely individualistic, self-styled New York personality on the run” (Kismaric, MoMA curator).

A fine copy, scarce signed.
