"In 1896 and again in 1897, Montmartre Bohemians… organized the Fête de la Vache Enragée, a festival which parodied the traditional Fête du Boeuf Gras associated with Mardi Gras festivities. Instead of celebrating the fatted calf, a symbol of plenty, the Fête de la Vacche Enragée was dedicated to the poor… For the festivities, [participants] organized a dancing parade through Montmartre, which they dubbed 'La Vachalcade" (Venita Datta). Journalist Georges Montorgueil devotes a large portion of La Vie à Montmartre to the poor, the Fête, the dance, and "la veilleuse de nuit." Vidal captures Montmartre's architecture, daily life, religion, politics, the art world, music, dancing, cabarets, and nightlife. Text in French. Original illustrated paper wrappers, featuring La Vachalcade, bound in.

Front inner hinge expertly reinforced. About-fine condition, beautifully bound.
