Photie Man

Tom Wood

A “WRY YET AFFECTIONATE PORTRAIT”: FIRST EDITION OF TOM WOOD’S PHOTIE MAN

WOOD, Tom. Photie Man. (Göttingen, Germany): Steidl, (2005). Quarto, original stiff illustrated wrappers, original plastic corner pieces. $225.

First edition of Wood’s vibrant photographic chronicle of life— and night-life—in the towns of northern England where Wood was known as “photie man,” featuring 106 full-color and 68 tritone photographic plates (many double page).

As in his monograph of Liverpool in All Zones Off Peak, Tom Wood here combines “both monochrome and colour” to produce a similarly “wry yet affectionate portrait” of ordinary people in the towns of Merseyside and New Brighton, where Wood was popularly known as “photie man” (Parr & Badger II:308). Published in conjunction with 2005 exhibitions in Amsterdam, Toulouse, Lausanne and Copenhagen. First printing in wrappers only, without dust jacket as issued. With original red plastic corner pieces.

A fine copy.
