André Maurois has long been considered one of the most influential and outspoken of twentieth-century French writers. "The life of Maurois was a full one. He had most of the honors that can come to a man of letters in France and abroad. He enjoyed the friendship of his most distinguished contemporaries, and he has had an influence on the literature of his time" (Keating, v). Maurois served in the French armed forces in World War II, but fled to the United States after France's loss to Germany. Tragedy in France is an unflinching account of where the French went wrong in the war against Germany, as a cautionary tale to the United States and Great Britain. At the time of this volume's publication, Condé Nast was the head of his own publishing empire.
