Joy Before the Object

Albert Renger-patzsch

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF ALBERT RENGER-PATZSCH

RENGER-PATZSCH, Albert. Albert Renger-Patzsch: Joy Before the Object. New York: Aperture Foundation, 1993. Quarto, original photographic paper wrappers. $125.

First paperback edition of this overview of Renger-Patzsch’s work by Aperture, with 50 full-page photographic plates.

“For Renger-Patzsch, photography was a way of recreating the order of things through the order of the photograph. His pictures of factories, mines, architecture, even flowers and animals, have an unwavering precision that is almost painful in its purity” (New York Times). He strove for “a strictly ‘photographic photography’: pictures that were above all straightforward, easily apprehended documents, free of the distracting artistic interventions of his avant-garde contemporaries… The New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) style he sparked was one of Germany’s most pervasive modernist movements” (Roth, 50). With Biographical Profile by Donald Kuspit. A hardcover edition was published the same year.

A fine copy.
