William Klein

William Klein

INSCRIBED BY WILLIAM KLEIN TO A CLOSE FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE

KLEIN, William. William Klein. (Tokyo): Pacific Press Service, (1991). Large square quarto, original stiff photographic wrappers. $1200.

Revised, expanded edition of a 1987 exhibition catalogue, published to include additional photographs and stills from Klein’s films, boldly inscribed by him in black felt pen to longtime friend, noted photojournalist Peter Turnley, “To Peter, again from [Japanese symbols for ‘Tokyo’], With Best! William Klein,” featuring 50 pages of photographic plates and numerous additional images.

William Klein's revolutionary Life is Good and Good for You has been widely hailed as "one of the first great 'Pop' books" (Parr & Badger I:243). Klein followed that revolutionary work with three more "city" photobooks-a landmark series concluded by his Tokyo in 1964. "Like Hokusai," wrote critic Maurice Pinguet, "William Klein has created a Manga-a sudden throng of images, faces, streets, crowds, and attitudes… All are instantaneously caught, still moving, alive, and gesturing." Klein's affection for Japan brought him back often, and his trademark style continues in this revised 1991 edition of a catalogue published during a 1987 Tokyo exhibit. Published only in wrappers, this expanded work contains additional photographs and images from Klein's films, along with commentaries in both English and Japanese. See Open Book, 206; Roth, 140. A unique association copy from the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times).

A fine copy with an especially memorable association.
