William Klein

BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY WILLIAM KLEIN TO NOTED PHOTOJOURNALIST PETER TURNLEY

KLEIN, William. Photographe etc. (Paris): Centre George Pompidou / Herscher, (1983). Tall quarto, original photographic paper boards. $2500.

First edition, celebrating the first retrospective tribute to Klein, boldly inscribed on the half title to his close friend and colleague, award-winning photojournalist Peter Turnley, “To Peter, Retrospective #1…more power for you & Harper’s… a great situation! All best, William,” with over 100 black-and-white photogravures.

With the 1956 publication Life is Good and Good for You, William Klein produced "what is in effect one of the first great 'Pop' books" (Parr & Badger I:243). As captured in this first retrospective of his work, Klein continued to revolutionize the medium with his radically inventive approach. In his years "as a photographer, filmmaker and graphic designer… Klein gets in the face of his subjects, and thus in ours, jamming as much experience of the world as he can down the camera's throat" (New York Times). First edition, published coincident with the exposition William Klein held at National Museum of Modern Art, in the George Pompidou Center, Paris, May 11-June 12, 1983. Text in French by Carole Naggar. This rare association copy is inscribed to Paris-based photojournalist Peter Turnley, who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" for Newsweek and Life (New York Times). In Klein's warm note, he congratulates Turnley for joining Harper's Magazine as a contributing editor and photographer.

Interior fine; slight edge-wear to spine ends of bright photographic boards. A distinctive, near-fine association copy, scarce inscribed.
