William Klein

INSCRIBED BY WILLIAM KLEIN TO AWARD-WINNING PHOTOJOURNALIST PETER TURNLEY

KLEIN, William. Films etc. (Paris): Marval, (1998). Tall quarto, original stiff photographic wrappers. $1500.

First edition, boldly inscribed by Klein on the half title to close friend and colleague, noted photojournalist Peter Turnley, “To Peter, From Mr. Freedom, etc. etc., Bill Klein [line drawn] Paris 2005,” with numerous color and black-and-white images from the provocative films of Klein, “whose raw, visceral style struck an instant chord” in the world of still- and motion-picture photography (Parr & Badger I:268).

William Klein, whose brashly inventive photobooks established new horizons in the field, has also made a distinctive imprint on motion pictures, working in that medium since his first film Broadway by Light premiered in 1958. Many of his most notable documentaries and features are highlighted here in Films etc., including the critically praised Muhammad Ali the Greatest, 1964-74 (1974), Klein's "sendup of a Parisian high fashion show" in Qui êtes-vous Polly Maggoo?(1966), The Little Richard Story (1980) and his "satire of American foreign policy during Vietnam and the Cold War" in Mr. Freedom (1968). Text in French by Claire Clouzot, featuring an interview with Klein. Klein makes humorous reference to that film, Mr. Freedom, in this rare association copy, inscribed to his friend and colleague, Paris-based photographer Peter Turnley, who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" for Newsweek and Harper's Magazine (New York Times).

A fine copy, scarce inscribed.
