Certain Robert Doisneau

Robert Doisneau

WARMLY INSCRIBED BY DOISNEAU

DOISNEAU, Robert. Un certain Robert Doisneau. (Paris): Chêne, (1986). Folio, original black cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $3800.

First edition of this handsome retrospective tribute to Doisneau, affectionately inscribed on the half title, “Pour Bill et Betty au images faites toujours à l’imparfait de l’objectif-mais avec un bien sincère amitie-Robert Doisneau” (For Bill and Betty, images made with the always imperfect camera lens-but with sincere friendship-Robert Doisneau), from the collection of noted photojournalist Peter Turnley, onetime assistant to Doisneau, featuring over 100 photogravure plates from Doisneau’s celebrated career.

"A leading exponent of French humanist photography," Robert Doisneau (1912-94) devoted much of his life to creating a "visual social history of Paris, its people and culture, from the 1930s to the 1970s" (Lenman, 180). Doisneau's lifelong commitment to immersing himself in the life of those he photographed yielded numerous "elegant black-and-white photographs [that] seem the perfect embodiment of Gallic wit and romance… Doisneau's best images are characterized by their knowing wit and affection for human foibles. Working in a photographic tradition that includes the work of Kertesz, Brassaï and Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau specialized in images of the rich social fabric of Parisian life"-many seen here in Un certain Robert Doisneau (New York Times). With cover photograph of Doisneau by Henri Cartier-Bresson; text in French. See Parr & Badger I:201. See Roth, 132. This rare inscribed copy from the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek and Harper's Magazine who got his start as Doisneau's assistant.

Images quite clean and fresh; light foxing to verso of bright photographic dust jacket. A scarce, inscribed copy, near-fine.
