“THE EBOULIANCE OF A CHILD AND THE EYE OF AN ADULT”: REPRESENTATIVE SELECTION OF JACQUES LARTIGUE’S WORK

LARTIGUE, Jacques Henri. Photographe. (Paris): Nathan/Delpire, (1998). Oblong quarto, original brown cloth, original dust jacket. $150.

First edition of this wonderful selection, with 126 rich full-page photogravures (many folding). From the collection of acclaimed photojournalist Peter Turnley.

“Filled with the wit, openness, curiosity, and spontaneity of childhood, these dynamic images of early airplanes and fashionable women, pets and pools… give new life to the belle époque of French history” (Roth, 29). This representative selection of Lartigue’s work portrays France’s affluent families, entertaining themselves in their houses and by the sea, or experimenting with new inventions, such as cars and planes. Lartigue was determined to avoid the dark side, focusing instead on what he called “my shadowless heaven.” “His reputation as a photographer was not truly established until he was 69, with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the publication of a portfolio in Life magazine” (Ministère de la Culture). From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper’s Magazine, who has covered “almost every important international news event of the last 15 years” (New York Times).
