“THE ABSOLUTE SURENESS OF HIS EYE IS UNMISTAKABLE”: FIRST EDITION OF THOMAS STRUTH’S STRANGERS AND FRIENDS

STRUTH, Thomas. Strangers and Friends. Photographs 1986-1992. Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT, (1994). Tall quarto, original debossed green cloth, original green dust jacket. $250.

First edition of Thomas Struth’s first book published in America, with 21 color and 37 duotone plates (including two gatefolds).

“One of the most promising of a young generation of German photographer-artists influenced by Hilla and Bernd Becher… Struth deserves all the attention he has been getting… the absolute sureness of his eye is unmistakable” (New York Times). In Strangers and Friends Struth mixes views of city spaces with “his well-known images of people looking at art in museums…. a meditation on the complicated dialogue between photography and painting” (Parr & Badger II:264, 273). With essay by Richard Sennett. First edition, published in conjunction with the January-March 1994 exhibit at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, preceding two subsequent editions: a later 1994 edition accompanying an exhibit at the London ICA, and a 1995 exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. See Parr & Badger I:86. See Roth, 50.

Images clean and bright; light edge-wear, faint toning to near-fine dust jacket.
