SATYR PIPES FOR THE ECHO: LARGE VINTAGE ADVERTISING POSTER

LOURY, H.S. Original poster, “The Echo” [Chicago: The Echo Literary Magazine], 1895. Original two-color lithographic poster on pale green stock, measuring 20 by 25 inches. $1200.

Large vintage advertising poster for the Chicago-based literary magazine, The Echo, with wonderful pipe-playing satyr.

“Magazines promoted by posters were not unknown or printed in small numbers… Yet when they were obviously advertised with striking designs, their notoriety was heightened… A sense of novelty, highlighted by the very nature of the poster image, elevated their creative importance” (Weisberg, 106). The Echo literary magazine, begun at Lafayette, Indiana in 1883 and ended in Chicago in 1901 (Mott III, 198n), “typically utilized some horn or another in its posters to provide promotional reverberation… Loury places his twin pipes in the capable grip of a rather tumescent satyr” (Rennert & Shargel 63).

Moderate wear and soiling to left margin, not affecting image. A splendid piece.
