“THE TERRIFYING, CLAUSTROPHOBIC ORDINARINESS OF THE REAL AMERICA”: FIRST EDITION OF CHAUNCEY HARE’S INTERIOR AMERICA

HARE, Chauncey. Interior America. (Millerton, New York): Aperture, (1978). Oblong quarto, original tan cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $850.

First edition of the first photobook by Guggenheim Award-winner Chauncey Hare, with 77 black-and-white photogravure plates.

The record of a path that took him from the comfortable life of an engineer at Standard Oil to a journey across America, Chauncey Hare’s Interior America explores the lives of everyday Americans. The 77 black-and-white photographs in this, his first book, unveil “the terrifying, claustrophobic ordinariness of the real America” (Theodore Roszak). After turning to photography in the mid-1960s, Hare was encouraged by Minor White, who wrote him saying “You are on the verge of a breakthrough.” Hare applied for and won the first of three Guggenheim Fellowships and his work was featured in an exhibit at MoMA. With an introduction by Hare. Open Book, 316. Parr & Badger II:23.

Book fine; minor tape reinforcement, very lightest foxing to verso of near-fine, price-clipped dust jacket.
