SOL LEWITT’S PHOTOGRAPHIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY: “INTERESTING CLUES TO WHAT HE THINKS”

LEWITT, Sol. Autobiography. New York: Multiples, 1980. Oblong quarto, original flexible white paper covers, original photographic dust jacket. $1600.

First edition of this intriguing series of autobiographical photographs of LeWitt’s personal surroundings, presented in 126 modular grids.

Because Sol LeWitt works with modules and systems, and his early wall drawings are based on grids, he is sometimes described as a Minimalist. His innovative style of using grids is thought to be “as important for drawing as Pollock’s use of the drip technique had been for painting in the 1950s” (Bernice Rose). This collection of images of household objects and personal accoutrements, arranged in grids of nine-squares per page, “provides interesting clues to LeWitt, what he thinks, what he does and how he lives.”

Fine condition. Scarce.
