INSCRIBED BY JAMES STEPHENS
STEPHENS, James. The Hill of Vision. Dublin: Maunsel, 1912. Small octavo, original half beige cloth and dark green paper boards, top edge gilt, uncut. $485.
First Irish edition, inscribed on the title page, “To Alice & Harry Lappin, From James Stephens.”
Stephens was encouraged by the Irish poet George William Russell (“AE”). His poetry shows “great prosodic ability… firmly rooted in Irish lore” (Hamilton, 519). Published the same year in New York and London, this work includes “In the Poppy Field,” “In the Cool of the Evening,” and “The Lonely God.”
Sparse faint spots of foxing on first few leaves, spine darkened to brown. An extremely good inscribed copy.
