Self Portrait

Lee Friedlander

“I MIGHT CALL MYSELF AN INTRUDER”: FRIEDLANDER’S SELF PORTRAIT

FRIEDLANDER, Lee. Self Portrait. (New York): Haywire Press, (1970). Oblong small quarto, original photographically illustrated wrappers. $750.

First edition, trade issue.

In this his first monograph and one of his most important works, Friedlander seems “to be lurking or barging into his own pictures— a hovering, disembodied Everyman, at once here and gone… Memory transience, identity, and the impossibility of capturing anything more than a fiction or a mask in photographic portraiture— Friedlander put all these issues slyly into play with Self Portrait, along with a snapshot-style looseness and idiosyncracy that sit well in this simple, straightforward design” (Roth, 198). There was also a hardbound signed limited issue of this work released simultaneously.

Images fine, unobtrusive pinpoint foxing to preliminaries and front wrapper, light rubbing to wrappers. A near-fine copy.
