Equus and Shrivings

Peter Shaffer

"WHAT THE EYE DOES NOT SEE, THE HEART DOES NOT GRIEVE OVER, DOES IT?"

SHAFFER, Peter. Equus and Shrivings. New York: Atheneum, 1974. Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket. $250.

First collected edition of these two plays.

Among other awards, Shaffer's acclaimed Equus—which premiered in London and was first published in 1973—won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Play. Shaffer wrote the screenplay for the 1977 film adaptation starring Richard Burton. Five years earlier, The Battle of Shrivings had premiered in London at the Lyric Theatre. The playwright states in his foreword that the retitled and extensively revised version printed here, first published in London the same year, "is much nearer to my original goal than was the first."

A fine copy.
