Limestone

Josef Koudelka

“HERE THE HAND OF MAN IS EVERYWHERE”

KOUDELKA, Josef. Limestone. Paris: Éditions de La Martinière, (2001). Oblong quarto, original stiff gray paper boards, original shipping box. $1650.

Limited first edition, number 11 of 500 copies, with 36 dramatic, double-page black-and-white views of limestone quarries, accordion-folded.

"A powerfully original photographer, possessed by a frenzied desire to see" (Frizot, 631). Most famous for such evocative documentary projects as Gypsies (1975) and Exiles (1988), Koudelka's later work emphasizes vast, panoramic landscapes over people. Humanity is nevertheless still present in these vistas; as an introductory essay notes, "Here [in these images of quarry sites] the hand of Man is everywhere. Nature is transformed, turned upside down. There is not a square centimeter which has escaped his touch…" With original cardboard shipping box.

A fine copy.
