I Like to Eat Right on the Dirt

Danny Lyon

“NOAH WAS A GARBAGE MAN”: SIGNED COPY OF DANNY LYON’S I LIKE TO EAT RIGHT ON THE DIRT

LYON, Danny. I Like to Eat Right on the Dirt. (Clintondale, New York): Bleak Beauty, (1989). Oblong quarto, original spiral-bound blue and gray stiff paper wrappers. $450.

First edition of Lyon’s detailed photo-essay of his sons Noah and Raphe growing up—a testament to boyhood, signed by him on the title page.

“Lyon may be described as one of photography’s great loners” (Parr & Badger, 256). “His early work has a definite Woodstock-to-Altamont trajectory. He went from being the staff photographer of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, documenting the early ‘60s civil rights movement… to being the staff photographer of the Chicago Outlaws motorcyclist’s club, documenting the violent subculture of early biker gangs” (Roth, 190). Subtitled “A Child’s Journey Back in Space and Time,” this subsequent work represents Lyon’s “commitment to portray contemporary life in a truthful, sympathetic, and understanding manner” (McDarrah, 288). Its 52 pages of multiple images of Lyon’s sons, Noah and Raphe, are accompanied by an imaginative running dialogue between the two boys. One of 1500 copies.

Only slightest edge-wear to original stiff wrapper. A beautiful signed copy.
