Flowers and Trees

Lee Friedlander

“A PLEASURE FOR THE EYE, A VISUAL FEAST”

FRIEDLANDER, Lee. Flowers and Trees. New City, New York: Haywire, (1981). Folio, spiral binding cased in original purple cloth. $1800.

First edition of this collection of 40 black-and-white photographs of flowers and trees, signed by Friedlander on the dedication page.

A member of the Social Landscape school of photography, the photographs included in Flowers and Trees provide a sharp contrast to Friedlander's Self Portrait (1970) and The American Monument (1976), which chronicle life in small-town America and often employ visual puns. Flowers and Trees is just that: photographs of blossoms and leaves taken between 1972 and 1979, in the United States, Canada, France, Japan and Australia. Friedlander's first one-man show was held at the International Museum of Photography in 1963. In 1967, along with Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus, he was one of the three artists selected for the influential exhibition "New Documents" at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. In awarding Friedlander the 2005 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography, the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation noted that "his photography is a pleasure for the eye, a visual feast."
