First edition of this collection of 140 finely screened halftone photographs, taken between 1954 and 1981, signed by Uelsmann on the half title.

In selecting images that would represent Uelsmann’s work in retrospect, James Enyeart hopes “to unravel exactly what Ulesmann’s photographic metaphors represent and what the roots of his choice of symbols are.” By the “figurative nature” of his surrealistic photographs, Ulesmann “may be seen to have altered the language, the substance, and the direction” of photography itself (Peter Bunnell). Owner embossed stamp on front free endpaper.
