Poster advertising upcoming article in Century Magazine

Henry M. Stanley

WONDERFUL LARGE ORIGINAL ART NOUVEAU SCRIBNER’S POSTER ADVERTISING EXPLORER STANLEY’S UPCOMING ARTICLE IN CENTURY MAGAZINE

STANLEY, Henry M. Poster promoting Stanley’s contribution to the Century Magazine. New York: Scribner’s, circa 1900. Illustrated sheet (13-1/2 by 20 inches); framed, entire piece measures 22 by 29-1/2 inches. $3800.

Vintage advertising poster for Stanley’s upcoming article on “the development of Africa,” with blue vegetation and large yellow sunburst.

Perhaps no adventurer is more closely connected with Africa than Lord Stanley, whose various expeditions did more to reveal the nature of that continent than any modern explorer. An article by him in Scribner’s Century Magazine would certainly warrant advance publicity. The Century Company produced some of the greatest Art Nouveau posters around the turn of the 20th century, commissioning original graphics from such masters of poster art as Louis John Rhead, Eugene Grassett, Edward Penfield, and George Wharton Edwards. This image bears the monogram “HML.”

A few closed marginal tears and shallow chips to bottom corners, frame with splinter to one corner. An arresting image. Bright, fresh and scarce.
