JAPANESE PAPERMAKING BOOK, 1925

(JAPAN). Kamisuki Chouhouki [Notes on Significant Paper-Making Processes]. Tokyo: Sanshodo Publishers, 1925. Octavo, original blue paper wrappers. $250.

Presentation copy of the facsimile edition of one of the most important Japanese books on paper making, richly illustrated with numerous line cuts of the process.

This faithful reproduction of an original book printed about 1798 describes the process of paper-making in Japan. The lovely 18th century Japanese illustrations demonstrate the paper-making process, beginning with the growing of the plants, and concluding with the finished product. In addition, in a modern section at the end of the volume, photographs relating to the book’s original creators are included. The book was the first in a proposed series published by the Paper-making and Priting Study Group. Laid into the volume is a letter from one of the members of the group, presenting the volume as a gift. Traditional Japanese materials were used in the creation of this volume, including rice-paper and traditional binding techniques.

Original silk-tie binding frayed. A lovely volume in near-fine condition.
