Signed limited first edition, number 596 of 1026 copies signed by Smith, with mounted half-tone impressions of 42 western landscapes and 15 panoramic views, and an original photograph printed by Smith as the frontispiece to Volume I.

Winner of the “best photographic book of the year” at the 1981 Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie. “I have always felt that it is how one sees rather than what one sees that makes any photograph interesting.” In the mid 1970s Smith’s organization of objects in his photographs “shifted from an emphasis on form to an emphasis on space itself” (Enyeart).
