Jew of New York

Ben Katchor

"THE MOST POETIC, DEEPLY LAYERED ARTIST EVER TO DRAW A COMIC STRIP"

KATCHOR, Ben. The Jew of New York. New York: Pantheon Books, (1998). Square octavo, original pictorial black and gray boards. $400.

Early printing, inscribed,“Ben Katchor, 2/24/99, The Strand,” alongside drawing resembling the character Mr. Marah.

"The most poetic, deeply layered artist ever to draw a comic strip," Katchor was the first comic-strip artist to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. His work has been the focus of museum exhibitions, a New Yorker profile, transformed into opera, and the subject of high praise, from Art Spiegelman to Michael Chabon (New York Times). In The Jew of New York, a series commissioned by the Jewish weekly Forward, Katchor was inspired by accounts of Major Mordechai Noah's attempt to establish a Jewish homeland in upstate New York. With original printed rear band.

A fine copy.
