Portfolio of Japanese Flower Prints

Japan

18 BEAUTIFUL, VIBRANTLY HAND-COLORED 19TH-CENTURY FOLIO JAPANESE FLOWER PRINTS

(JAPAN). Portfolio of Japanese Flower Prints. No place, no printer, circa 1880. Loose folio sheets (11 by 16 inches), 18 original block-prints on rice paper. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $5500.

Portfolio of 18 Japanese woodblock flower prints, delicately hand-colored.

These vividly colored prints of cherry blossoms, peonies, and irises were originally a collection bound together as a set used to illustrate different varieties of Japanese flowers for sale at an English nursery. Each woodblock is printed in black, with intricate hand-coloring. Handwritten notation and labels of flower names affixed to each print. A lovely example of Japanese block-printing and floral art, sold as a collection.

Small stab holes from earlier binding. Bright, very beautiful impressions in extremely good condition.
