Message from the Interior

Walker Evans

WALKER EVANS’ MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIOR, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO ARNOLD CRANE

EVANS, Walker. Message from the Interior. New York: The Eakins Press, (1966). Square folio, original gray cloth, printed paper label. $6000.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed to fellow photographer and noted collector, “Arnold Crane, from Walker Evans.” With 12 full-page photogravures from photographs of the American heartland made by Evans from 1931 to 1962.

Taken from 1931 to 1962, these iconic photographs provide “emblems of home, possessions, and social status… for posterity’s sake,” even as they “pick up searing little spots of realism and underline them” (Icons of Photography, 72; Parr & Badger, 114). In addition to being one of the most noted American photographers of the 20th century, Arnold Crane was also one of the preeminent photography collectors in this country. Some of Crane's best known works are portraits of photographers, including Evans himself. With an afterword by John Szarkowski.

A fine presentation copy, scarce and desirable inscribed.
