THE DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH

COMMONS, John R. The Distribution of Wealth. New York: Macmillan, 1893. Octavo, modern black cloth, black morocco spine label. $600.

First edition of this important work by an early progressive economist, illustrated with charts, graphs, and one folding chart.

Commons, who taught economics at Wesleyan, Oberlin, Syracuse, and Wisconsin, described himself as “a socialist, a single-taxer, a free-silverite, a greenbacker, a municipal-ownerist, a member of the Congressional Church.” Commons staunchly supported unions and viewed them as a natural response to the overwhelming expanse of large corporations; he was one of the founding fathers of what became known as the Wisconsin school of labor relations (ANB). Owner signature; library stamps and marginal ink notations.

A fine copy.
