Gallops 1 and 2 and Mr. Carteret

David Gray

"STEADY, LADY WASHINGTON! DROP YOUR CURB!"

GRAY, David. Gallops 1. WITH: Gallops 2. WITH: Mr. Carteret. New York: Derrydale Press, 1929. Three volumes. Royal octavo, publisher's red cloth gilt, top edges gilt, uncut. $800.

“The Hitchcock edition” of David Gray’s sporting stories, number 159 of 750 sets signed by the author on the half-title of Gallops 1.

Avid sportsman Eugene Connett, after studying the typography of Daniel Berkeley Updike, founded the famed Derrydale Press, with the intent "to reprint the very scarce early American books on sport which had become so rare that some of them would never be seen outside of a few private collections… and to produce a group of books on contemporary American sport which, because of their beauty, would be preserved instead of discarded in time." Gallops 1 first published 1897, the other two soon thereafter.

A fine signed set.
