When Aaron Copland turned 20, he set off for Paris and “found a ‘powerful,’ ‘exhilarating’ teacher in Nadia Boulanger; he stayed with her until 1924 and recruited other Americans to join and follow him” (New Grove 4: 719). First performed by Daniel Ericourt in Paris in 1923, Passacaglia is dedicated to Boulanger.
