Danzon Cubano

Aaron Copland

SIGNED TWICE BY AARON COPLAND

COPLAND, Aaron. Danzon Cubano. Lynbrook, New York: Boosey & Hawkes, (1943). Quarto, original paper wrappers, two copies laid in as issued; pp. 20, 20. $1000.

First edition, signed twice by Copland on the title page and the first page of music of one of the copies.

Written for two pianos. Composed in the 1942 for the 20th anniversary of the League of Composers, Danzon Cubano was first performed by the composer and Leonard Bernstein in December of that year. Based on the traditional danzon of Cuba (a much slower dance than the rhumba or samba), it uses fragments “heard and recorded by the composer during several visits to Cuba… According to the composer, Danzon Cubano is in no sense intended to be an authentic danzon, but only an American tourist’s impression of an absorbing Cuban dance form.”

With performance notations throughout; the unsigned copy has some light staining to the title page and a closed tear to one leaf with an early tape repair. Seam of original wrappers starting at base. An extremely good signed copy.
