Lawrence: The Last Crusade

Selden Rodman

“YOUR MIND IS STILL COMPLETELY OPEN TO THE POSSIBILITY OF GIVING HUMANITY SOME OF THE OPPORTUNITIES WE FEW ENJOY”

RODMAN, Selden. Lawrence. The Last Crusade. New York: Viking Press, 1937. Octavo, original gray cloth gilt. $300.

First edition, inscribed “To Emlen Etting—an artistic radical from a political radical—and all means lead to the same end! Selden.” With a signed typed letter to Etting from Rodman laid-in.

From 1932-1943 poet Selden Rodman was the co-founder and editor of Common Sense, a liberal review. His letter to 20th century artist and book illustrator, Emlen Etting, dated April 28, 1937, is typed on Common Sense letterhead and discusses Lawrence's dual destinies and his simultaneous war against both of them, concluding with warm words of praise for Etting as "one of the few remaining yea-sayers… still completely open to the possibility of giving humanity some of the opportunitys (sic) we few (in no just partiality) enjoy." Without original dust jacket. Occasional pencil marginalia.

Evidence of adhesive to both the letter and the front pastedown where it was previously pasted in. Only the lightest fading to cloth, else fine. A desirable inscribed copy.
