Dialogue With Solitude

Dave Heath

“FROM WEARINESS AND DESPAIR TO JOY AND JUBILATION”: LIMITED BOXED SET OF HEATH’S DIALOGUE WITH SOLITUDE, BOOK AND PRINT BOTH SIGNED BY THE ARTIST

HEATH, Dave. A Dialogue with Solitude. (Toronto): Lumiere, 2000. Folio, original gray buckram, original pictorial dust jacket, original black linen box. Issued with original photogravure in red paper portfolio laid in. $1400.

First signed limited edition of Heath’s photographic “progression from weariness and despair to joy and jubilation,” number 27 of 100 boxed sets with signed companion photogravure.

Heath’s pictures “reveal compassion and understanding, penetration and a masterly use of the medium” (Jacob Deschin), and his Dialogue with Solitude stands as “one of the most important photo books of the sixties” (Noorderlicht Photofestival). First appearing in 1965, it was described as “a self-portrait in which the artist himself never really appears, but is revealed and interpreted by every detail.” This reissue of the first edition (“long out-of-print and highly sought by collectors”), is enlarged in format and updated with a retrospective letter by Robert Frank. Signed and numbered by Heath on the title page. The accompanying original dust-grained photogravure, entitled “Washington Square, New York City, 1958,” was printed by Jon Goodman and also signed by Heath.
