Theory of Money and Credit

Ludwig von Mises

"MISES SHOWS HERE HOW MISTAKEN MONETARY POLICIES LEAD TO THE DESTRUCTION OF LIBERTY": MISES' GREATEST ECONOMIC TREATISE, FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH IN EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET

MISES, Ludwig von. The Theory of Money and Credit. London: Jonathan Cape, (1934). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $5200.

First edition in English of this landmark in free market economic theory, in extremely scarce original dust jacket.

Considered Von Mises' greatest economic treatise, this work's emphasis on the origin of money and credit in the marketplace, the logic of rational individual action, and the enduring value of maintaining a gold standard free from government manipulation was an important alternative to the dominant trends in contemporary economic thought and practice. It was issued in English at a time when many Western nations, led by the U.S., were going off the gold standard to facilitate the creation of state-controlled investment capital to finance planned economic development. "Professor Mises shows here how mistaken monetary policies lead to the destruction of liberty" (Hazlitt, The Free Man's Library, 119-20). Originally published as Theories des Geldes und der Umlaufsmittel in Munich in 1912. Presentation inkstamp to half title; a few marginal ink annotations.

Front free endpaper excised; old tape remnants to pastedowns, with offsetting to facing pages. Repair to cloth at foot of spine. Dust jacket with light restoration to a few corners, most notably at head of spine, affecting two words in the title. A very good copy in the scarce original dust jacket.
