"DRIVING A GOLF-BALL IS NOT THE SAME AS BURSTING IN A BARN DOOR": A-B-C OF GOLF, 1916

DUNN, John Duncan. A-B-C of Golf. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, (1916). 12mo, original red-orange cloth. Housed in a custom slipcase. $550.

First edition of John Duncan Dunn's first book on golf, an early instructional manual that focuses on balance, with frontispiece illustration and ten full-page line drawings.

"Let us begin then," Dunn advises, "by putting aside all speculation and worry over such unimportant details as grip, stance, the snap of the wrists, timing of the stroke, and a score of similar shibboleths." Renowned golf course architect John Duncan Dunn designed courses such as Catalina Island Golf Club and Santa Ana Country Club. He went on to publish the three-volume How to Drive, How to Approach, How to Putt (1922), Elements of the Golf Swing (1930), and Natural Golf (1931). First edition, with publisher's code "B-Q" on copyright page, indicating that this was printed in February, 1916. Donovan & Murdoch 15550.
