Meditations

Marcus Aurelius

"THE MOST HUMAN OF ALL BOOKS"

AURELIUS ANTONINUS, Marcus. [Meditations]. London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1908. Quarto, contemporary full brown morocco gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, uncut. $2500.

Finely printed edition of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, finely bound in full morocco by Zaehnsdorf.

"The Meditations, the thoughts of a philosopher-king, have been considered by many generations one of the great books of all time… [and as] the most human of all books" (Britannica). Wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance are the qualities that Aurelius, stoic and practical moralist, identifies as most essential for co-existence; his writings represent an early and influential philosophy of humanism. The publisher, Arthur L. Humphreys, was one of the proprietors of Hatchards from about 1890 to 1924.

Interior clean, corners very gently bumped. A handsome volume in about-fine condition.
