After 32 years, All in the Family and the characters of Archie, Edith, Gloria and Mike are reaching more people than ever anticipated. From the airing of this pilot episode on national TV in 1971 to episodes currently in re-runs, All in the Family represents the turbulence of a politically demanding and ever changing time in American history. Norman Lear called his work, "Theatre of Content"—he added "if you want to send a message, call Western Union!"
