We Flew over the Bridge

Faith Ringgold

"PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY… A RICH AND HIGHLY INFORMATIVE WORK NOT ONLY OF HER OWN LIFE… BUT AS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN IN PARTICULAR" (JACOB LAWRENCE): FIRST EDITION OF RENOWNED BLACK ARTIST FAITH RINGGOLD'S MEMOIRS, WE FLEW OVER THE BRIDGE, 1995, INSCRIBED BY HER IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION

RINGGOLD, Faith. We Flew over the Bridge. The Memoirs of Faith Ringgold. Boston: Bulfinch Press, 1995. Large square quarto, original red cloth and blue paper boards, original dust jacket. $500.

First edition of Ringgold's lyrical, vibrant and riveting account of her life and art, wonderfully inscribed by her in the year of publication, "To R— You can fly. Faith Ringgold 10/13/95," with 32 pages of color illustrations.

Faith Ringgold "has confronted race relations in this country from every angle, led protests to diversify museums decades ago, and even went to jail for an exhibition she organized… every one of her images tells a story, as often to uplift as critique and almost always in bright, bold and inviting ways" (New York Times). To fellow Black artist Jacob Lawrence, who died in 2000, Ringold's memoir stands out as "a rich and highly informative work not only of her own life… but as an African American in particular. These memoirs are a part of American history—of what it means to be an artist, a writer, and a philosopher in our society." The book's title draws on her works and books such as Tar Beach (1991) and an image that is "a major motif of Ringgold's life… she is a bridge between the Harlem Renaissance and the civil rights era… a bridge between her mother's applied art of fashion design and her own fine art of painting and story quilts" (Philadelphia Inquirer). We Flew over the Bridge is at once an intensely personal, powerful "cultural history… and part portrait of perseverance" (Essence). "First Edition" stated on copyright page. Profusely illustrated with numerous in-text and 32 pages of color illustrations.

A fine inscribed copy.
