LACROIX'S ARTS IN THE MIDDLE AGES, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

LACROIX, Paul. The Arts in the Middle Ages, and at the Period of the Renaissance. London: Bickers and Son, circa 1890. Thick octavo, contemporary full plum calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers, raised bands, brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2200.

Early English translation of Lacroix's richly illustrated survey of the Middle Ages, with 19 brilliant chromolithographs and numerous woodcuts, beautifully bound by Bickers and Son.

LaCroix's magnificent survey explores the arts of the period, from architecture to weaponry, and from painting and sculpture to the craft of medieval bookbinding. Many of the 19 richly-hued chromolithographs by Kellerhoven are facsimiles of illuminations in the finest medieval manuscripts. Translated from the French by James Dafforne. Originally published in France in 1847.

A splendidly illustrated and beautifully bound volume in fine condition.
