"HAVING WITNESSED NAPOLEON'S LAST MOMENTS… I OWE IT TO THE WORLD TO RELATE WHAT I HAVE SEEN": ANTOMMARCHI'S LAST DAYS OF NAPOLEON, 1825 FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL BOARDS

(NAPOLEON) ANTOMMARCHI, F. The Last Days of Napoleon. Memoirs of the Last Two Years of Napoleon's Exile… London: Henry Colburn, 1825. Two volumes. Octavo, original drab boards, uncut. Housed in a custom morocco pull-off case. $1100.

First edition of Napoleon's physician's intimate portrait of the imprisoned ruler's final years, uncut in original boards, in a nice full morocco box by Riviere & Son. The copy of renowned collector Frank C. Deering, with his morocco-gilt bookplate.

Antommarchi, Napoleon's physician at St. Helena from 1818, produced this work as a sequel to the accounts of Count Las Cases and Dr. O'Meara, both of whom shared exile with Napoleon at St. Helena. A witness to Napoleon's death, "having attended him during his protracted agony, and closed his eyes," Antommarchi provides an intimate portrait of Napoleon in his final years. Publisher's ad leaf at rear of Volume II. Lowndes, 1649. Morocco-gilt bookplate of renowned bibliophile Frank C. Deering. A "collector from birth," Deering acquired many of his books through famed Philadelphia bookseller A.S.W. Rosenbach (Dickinson, 90).

Interiors clean and fine, only slightest wear to boards, joints tender, cords holding firm. Near-fine in original boards.
