Antommarchi, Napoleon's physician at St. Helena from 1818, produced this work as a sequel to the accounts of Count Las Cases and Dr. O'Meara, both of whom shared exile with Napoleon at St. Helena. A witness to Napoleon's death, "having attended him during his protracted agony, and closed his eyes," Antommarchi provides an intimate portrait of Napoleon in his final years.
