Two-Fold Slavery of the United States

Marshall Hall

"THERE IS A SECOND SLAVERY OF THE FREE OR EMANCIPATED AFRICAN IN THE UNITED STATES": HALL'S TWO-FOLD SLAVERY OF THE UNITED STATES, 1854 FIRST EDITION

HALL, Marshall. The Two-Fold Slavery of the United States; with a Project of Self-Emancipation. London: Adam Scott, 1854. 12mo, original green cloth, partially unopened. $900.

First edition of the renowned English doctor's notes on slavery after visiting the United States, with two folding maps, in the original cloth.

A renowned physician and neurophysiologist, Hall authored several medical texts, including Memoirs on the Nervous System (1837) and The Spinal System (1852). "From time to time Hall had criticized what he saw as injustice to the underprivileged… On his return from the United States, where he had visited Indian reservations, Hall wrote on slavery: The Two-Fold Slavery of the United States was published in 1854" (ODNB). "I soon perceived that the question was not one of mere slavery, as that term is usually employed; but that there is a second slavery of the free or emancipated African in the United States, severer, in certain respects, even than the first—a slavery to which too little attention has hitherto been paid" (p. 2). The second folding map, titled "Map of the Unfriendliness to the African Race," depicts the proportion "Of the Free Blacks to the Whites." With eight pages of publisher's ads at rear. Owner pencil signature.

Interior generally clean, cloth sunned and toned, especially along spine, gilt still bright. Very good in the original cloth.
