THE WORKS OF JANE AUSTEN, ATTRACTIVELY BOUND

AUSTEN, Jane. Works. London: Robert Riviere & Son, circa 1930. Five volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $4500.

Lovely later edition of Austen’s novels, attractively bound by Riviere and Son.

"Generations of readers have marveled at the modernity of her work… She is the mother of the English 19th-century novel as Scott is the father of it" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 23). Contains Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Each volume with a color frontispiece illustration by Charles E. Brock, an outstanding illustrator of English classics who was widely acclaimed for "his unerring sense of period atmosphere and a flair for depicting character with a humorous sympathy" (Harthan, 239). With introductory notes by R. Brimley Johnson. Contemporary gift inscription in one volume.

Interiors fine, bindings quite beautiful, with small stain to leather near spine of Northanger Abbey. A lovely set.
