Travels in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia, and Palestine

R. R. Madden

"IT HAS BEEN MY FATE TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN FOR A SPY IN SYRIA… TO HAVE BEEN SHOT AT ONCE ON THE NILE… TO HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH SORCERY IN NUBIA"

MADDEN, Richard Robert. Travels in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia, and Palestine. London: Henry Colburn, 1829. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary full speckled calf sympathetically rebacked, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $2000.

First edition of this entertaining and insightful epistolary travel narrative, rare with hand-colored aquatint frontispiece portrait of the author in Syrian dress, in contemporary calf covers.

"Few who have not visited the East can have an adequate idea of the many obstacles that stand in the way of scientific research… it has been my fate to have been taken for a spy in Syria, to have endangered my life in Candia, and to have been a captive with Greek pirates" (Preface). An accomplished physician, Madden traveled through Egypt, the Levant and Asia Minor from 1824-27. His travelogue consists of candid letters to various correspondents, among them the Earl of Blessington, Charles Gardiner and Sir Moses Montefiore, the British philanthropist. He proves himself to be humane, humorous, and a keen observer of culture and customs. Bound with half title in Volume I; without half title or advertisement leaf at rear of Volume II. Blackmer 1056.

Text generally clean, minor rubbing to extremities. A nicely refurbished copy in extremely good condition.
